It might have made more sense to catch the train up in Solana Beach rather than backtrack south to the main station in downtown San Diego, but we had a pleasant taxi driver to take us there. Early in the morning, in the dark, the streets were all but deserted.
San Diego's Santa Fe Depot was opened in 1915. Here is an old time picture from the internet.I believe our train left at 6:10 am and was due to arrive in Los Angeles at 8:50 am. So it's less than a 3 hour trip for this leg. In LA we would change trains.
