Amtrak train route - San Diego to Seattle

Here are two maps showing the train routes we took.

To get from San Diego to Los Angeles we took the Pacific Surfliner commuter train. Although it carries on up to San Luis Obispo we had to get off in LA in order to catch the Coast Starlight to Seattle. In total, it's a two day trip. We had taken part of this trip before but only north from Oakland, California, where the train departs at about 10:00 at night.

I didn't take pictures from the Surfliner since it was just becoming daybreak. Initially the route paralleled the highway we'd driven in the car before, by the coastal towns of Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas and Carlsbad. There were help-yourself snacks on board and it was an enjoyable ride.

It might have made more sense to catch the train up in Solana Beach rather than backtrack south to the main station in downtown San Diego, but we had a pleasant taxi driver to take us there. Early in the morning, in the dark, the streets were all but deserted.

San Diego's Santa Fe Depot was opened in 1915. Here is an old time picture from the internet.

I believe our train left at 6:10 am and was due to arrive in Los Angeles at 8:50 am. So it's less than a 3 hour trip for this leg. In LA we would change trains.

It was too late by this time to go Old Town. We went back to our hotel in La Jolla for our last night in San Diego.

I had wanted to have dinner at George's Ocean Terrace but Glenn was too tired and didn't want to eat anywhere fancy. We ordered up to our room instead. We might as well have eaten out. The bill from the hotel's Nine-Ten Restaurant was $35.41 for - get this - ONE cheddar cheese burger and tea for two!! Yes, that did include the gratuity. Maybe it cost so much because they included two unusually tiny bottles of ketchup, one shown below with a 4½" pepper shaker for scale.

We had to get up at 4:00 the next morning to catch a 6:10 am train to Los Angeles.

San Diego - Maritime Museum

After we left the ferry, we strolled along to the Maritime Museum, mainly to look at two ships - the Star of India and the Surprise. A rainbow broke out at this point, and the rain stopped. The museum was open until 8:00 pm so we could have gone aboard the ships but we didn't feel the need to. There were also submarines.

Well, every ten years the Star of India goes into dry dock and this was its year, so I was glad it made it back to the museum in time for our visit.

This ship sailed around the world 21 times and still sails with a volunteer crew every November.

HMS Surprise

This ship is a re-creation of a 24-gun British frigate.

Leaving Coronado

We didn't see all of Coronado, but it looked like no poor people lived there.

Now there was a flaw in my planning. I hadn't realized the trolley didn't stop at the ferry dock on its way back off the peninsula. Therefore we had to take a bus or catch a cab. True, we could have taken the trolley across the bridge, but we wanted to have the ferry experience. (Why? We live on an island and hate taking the ferry!) We would have caught one right away if the taxi driver had known where he was going. He let us off in the wrong place, so by the time we hiked over to the wharf, the ferry was just pulling away. We had a long wait in a not-too-exciting shopping area. Then it started to rain!

The ferry, when we finally got on it, stopped at the military base on its way back to downtown San Diego. If I remember correctly, we were warned against taking photos at the military base.

Leaving the Hotel del Coronado we crossed the street to a Brigantine restaurant. There are several of these restaurants in the San Diego area.

"You have to try a fish taco!" people said. So I did. Must say I was surprised to see it deep fried like a piece of halibut in fish 'n' chips, but unbeknownst to me at the time, you can get different kinds of fish cooked in different ways. The fish part was good so I ate it but left the soft shell taco and filling which, to me, just didn't seem to go.

Glenn's tomato soup, on the other hand, was delicious. This was the only place we left a lousy tip to go with the lousy service.

Hotel del Coronado - the beach

Too bad it wasn't a sparkling day like it was when we first saw this beach on Tuesday. It was so bright and inviting then. The trolley driver told us this beach is rated #4 in the US... the first three being in Hawaii (2) and Florida (1).

The Beach Village rooms are more expensive, I think, than the main hotel rooms of the Hotel del Coronado. They probably go in the $600-$1400 a night range.

I made a point of visiting the Crown Room to see the lights which were designed, oddly enough, by Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum. But our guide book says that the original crown chandeliers have been replaced! The room features the second largest unsupported domed ceiling in the United States.

The hotel lobby was constructed of Illinois oak and Honduran mahogany. This chandelier is in the lobby.

There were several stores in the hotel. In a candy shop Glenn found some old-time 'chicken bones'. Remember them? We wish we'd bought more than one bag.

It seems odd that La Jolla is part of San Diego, while the city of Coronado, which is much closer, is its own entity.

The history of Coronado's development is interesting. Here is just a bit of it from the net:

Coronado remained a barren peninsula and its chief population was jack rabbits until the island was purchased in 1885 by Elisha S. Babcock, Jr. and Hampton L. Storey. They rowed over to the island from San Diego to hunt rabbits and decided it would be an ideal setting for a luxurious resort hotel. With the railroad scheduled to reach San Diego, they believed Easterners looking for a more moderate climate would flock to the new hotel. The Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888 and shortly afterwards was sold to John D. Spreckels, the 'Sugar King.' The hotel is a designated National Historical Landmark.

Another important part of Coronado's history, both past and present, is aviation and the military. In 1911, Glenn Curtis opened an aviation camp in what is today the Naval Air Station North Island. During World War I, the Spreckels family sold it to the Navy for $5 million. In 1927 Col. Charles Lindbergh took off on the first leg of his journey to St. Louis, New York and Paris from North Island. Today, North Island homeports two aircraft carriers, making the military the top employer in the community.

When it opened in 1888, the million dollar Hotel del Coronado was the largest all-wood building in the country. Workers had been brought in from San Francisco, hundreds of thousands of feet of wood were shipped in, and about two million red shingles were used.

Inside were some historic displays. Charles Lindbergh was honored at the hotel after his trans-Atlantic flight in 1927. Many famous people visited 'the Del' including Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, Thomas Edison, Babe Ruth, Brad Pitt and Madonna. The hotel seemed popular with writers. Since an old copy of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was in a display case, maybe Mark Twain was one of them. But the author most connected to this hotel was L. Frank Baum who wintered there regularly.

This is an interesting use of the discarded hotel menus.

The hotel's biggest claim to fame though, must be for its appearance in the movie 'Some Like It Hot.' (An amusing Marilyn Munroe quote: "If you're gonna be two-faced at least make one of them pretty.")

On the trolley I won a wooden token for correctly answering the question the driver asked - what is the most popular fruit in America? This was as we drove by the fruit import facility we'd seen on the trolley tour before... so I knew the answer was bananas (even though technically they're not fruit).

We crossed the bridge and headed straight to the Hotel del Coronado.

I was quite excited to be at this place I'd seen so many years ago in postcards.

The Dragon Tree was used as a backdrop in the Marilyn Monroe movie Some Like It Hot, which was filmed at The Del in 1958."

San Diego - Seaport Village

Glenn went off to catch the trolley while I walked over to the park next to the aircraft carrier. We would meet there where the trolley has stopped before, when we had taken the whole tour on Tuesday. That was the plan anyway.

But as I searched around the buildings, I couldn't find a shopping mall. There was only a restaurant. I was getting a sinking feeling that I was in the wrong place. This was confirmed when the trolley bumped along down the street right past the park.

This was bad. Glenn and I were in San Diego. Neither of us had a cell phone - we had no way to contact one another. He was going to the shopping mall and I wasn't even sure where it was. I didn't even know its name. I did know that it was by the water though so I started walking on a path by the shore. Ahead were a number of buildings that could be a shopping centre. As I got near, I saw a trolley pull into the driveway. Eureka! But I was at the other end of the sprawling complex (Seaport Village) and had to cross a large parking lot. I didn't mention that my innards were acting up on this day, so this was no time to risk running. The trolley drove back out of the driveway.

At least I was at the right place but when I eventually got to the end where the trolley stopped, Glenn was nowhere to be found. Oh no. He may have started walking back to the park where he knew I was, but, with so many buildings and paths on the grounds, there would be no way to tell which route he might take. I hoped that he hadn't taken the trolley over to Coronado... or taken a cab back to the hotel. I was envisioning our day in ruins - the whole day spent trying to find one another.

Near the trolley stop was a ticket booth. I asked the man there if he'd perhaps seen my husband, thinking that Glenn might have checked in to see if I had asked about him. "Lady," he said with a droll tone, "Husbands are looking for their wives here all the time."

I stewed for a few minutes trying to figure out what to do. Now here's the amazing part. I turned around and saw Glenn getting off a trolley! It turned out that he'd missed the first one. He was annoyed that he'd missed it but it was sure lucky that he did. I love it when things work out like that.

I didn't take many photos. We visited a book store here, then caught the trolley to Coronado.

San Diego - statues

Glenn was tired. I got the bright idea that, since we were going to take the trolley over to Coronado, he could wait at the ticket booth for it while I ran over to the park with the statue, on the other side of the aircraft carrier. When we had taken the trolley before, it zipped into a mall by the water. I figured that mall was right beside the statue so I could meet Glenn when the trolley arrived. It seemed so simple.

Off I went down the street and around to the park.

And here is the 25 foot statue of the sailor and the nurse, called 'Unconditional Surrender.' If you wait a moment or two, somebody will come along to reenact the scene.

San Diego - USS Midway Museum

When I first heard about the Midway, I imagined some amusement park with a roller coaster, not an aircraft carrier.

With our late start, we decided to skip Old Town and just take a cab right to the aircraft carrier. We arrived a bit before the opening time of 10:00 and got in line for tickets. Adults: $17. Seniors: $13.

You need a wide angle lens to fit it all in.

There's the dock where we came in the other day, with a couple of cruise ships and a Hornblower ship.

Inside we inadvertently got caught up in a self-guided audio tour, winding through a maze of corridors. The tour is probably quite interesting but I really wasn't into it on this day. Once we found our way back out to the gift shop, I visited the washroom where this sign was inside the door. Mainly, I'll remember it for being when I figured out what was wrong with the camera's light setting. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware that the picture sizes were also wrong. We didn't discover that until after we got home. So all of the pictures taken with this camera for the rest of this trip have the sides chopped off.

We really just wanted to get up to the flight deck. Glenn went up to one of the young guys on the deck and, noting the wings he was wearing, asked if he was a pilot. The fellow said, no, he just worked around the airplanes. Not even on the airplanes.

What I wanted to see most was the runway from end to end. But we couldn't because of all the displays cluttering it up. Being there was like standing on the roof of a large department store... with some airplanes... and guys standing around.

I just wanted to get off and cross that bridge (to Coronado) in the distance. But first, I'll have a closer look at that statue.
