Butchart Gardens August 19, 2011

One of our favourite things on the menu at the Blue Poppy restaurant this summer were salmon cakes.

Butchart Gardens - week of July 5, 2011

Roses

According to Butchart's recent newsletter, they "lost over 1200 roses due to weather related circumstances." I'm not sure why since it didn't seem a particularly harsh winter. They said the most affected were the hybrid tea roses. This means we should see some new varieties this summer.

Butchart Gardens June 28, 2011

I'm a little behind.

The peanut cart (see May 17 entry) up at the Rose Carousel has become a popcorn cart.

Two flowers I can't get decent photos of: sweetpeas (close up)...

... and delphiniums (way in the background).

Lousy picture but interesting planting in this pot.

I'm not certain but the name 'Handkerchief Tree' comes to mind. I read that it goes by the name of Dove Tree, and is also known as Pocket-handkerchief Tree.

Three roses.

Butchart Gardens June 30, 2010

According to the plant identification booth at the gardens, this plant is called Astrantia. It's another one of those wort plants - also known as Masterwort or Great Masterwort, not sure which. The name 'wort' just doesn't seem to suit flowers.

Less than two weeks ago on June 18th, roses weren't in flower at Butchart's but now the rose garden is full of blossoms. Every year there are types I've never heard of such as: Bucks Fizz, Rotary Sunrise and Neptune.

The Passion Flower has mighty strange design when you really look at it.

Interlude - Butchart Gardens June 12, 2009

It has been a while since I posted flower pictures here, so we'll revisit our first trip out to Butchart Gardens after we returned home from our holiday.

I was surprised to see blue poppies still around. I think last year they were finished by now.

I love columbines.

It was nice to see roses out too. Top: Double Delight. Middle: Rainbow Sorbet? Bottom: I don't know.

Our province's flower, the dogwood.
