Yesterday was our anniversary and eleven years ago today Glenn and I were in Amsterdam. One of the first things we did after checking into our hotel was to take an enchanting nighttime canal cruise, compliments of my Mom and sister. It was the perfect start to our wonderful week in the Netherlands. We would go back there in a minute. (Painting by Glenn.)
I've been to amsterdam twice on layovers to other destinations. Do they purposely give you 10 hours between flights so you can take a 20 minute train into the city? I love this little place too. Perfect for walking and bikes.
ReplyDeleteMy two day-trips were 13 years apart, but it won't be that long for my next one!
Here's my last day-trip to Amsterdam last August!

I love your photos!! If you have more time next visit, considering buying a day pass on the train and zip around the country. What fun.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't care about the Red Light District or the pot either but the art (Van Gogh Museum!), architecture and people were highlights. My favourite paintings at the Rijksmuseum were by artists I didn't know - Cesar van Everdingen's "Young Woman Warming her Hands over a Brazier" and Anton Mauve's "Morning Ride". There was a funny moment when Glenn loudly critiqued the drawing in part of Rembrandt's Night Watch. We were surprised that we could walk right up to the unprotected painting. I was also surprised to learn that centuries ago it had been chopped down in size to fit a wall. Imagine leaving parts out of a composer's symphony.
I'm sure I could spend a whole month in the Netherlands and still not get to see everything I wanted to. Who knew that such a flat country could be so interesting.
