May 21, 2012 - staying put

Plymouth
Monday May 21, 2012

Email I wrote then, with updated comments...

All of a sudden it warmed up today and there’s a soft watercolour sky that reminds me of a painting of England I had in my room as a kid.

Apparently I wasn’t meant to go anywhere today. Got a late start - sometimes innards just dictate that. It may have been unwise anyway after yesterday’s 12 hour outing to Longleat. Had planned to go to Sidmouth to see if that’s where I want to go next, but there was about a two hour wait for the next bus, which would have only got me part way there.

Plan B: go to a little town in Cornwall. It’s not as far away. Had 40 minutes to wait for that bus so made the mistake of trotting over to the bank to try to sort out problem with not being able to get credit card balance. Tried card in machine, talked to woman who then talked to the manager who went into Google but the computer didn’t work and on and on. Upshot: I was across the street when the bus to the connecting town in Cornwall pulled away.

Can’t do any research at the records office as they’re closed on Monday. I’ll wander over to the Barbican soon and see if the book I ordered has come in yet. (It had.)

Anyway, there are three day trips I still want to make from Plymouth, plus a fourth to visit the newly-found relative, who is near Exeter. Am considering a bus tour that leaves next Monday for Suffolk. Goes ‘til Friday and comes all the way back to Plymouth. Not sure it will make sense to come back here by then. Also, if I go east, there are other places I wanted to visit such as Rye. Maybe I’ll forget that tour.

The hotel manager here reminded me that I still haven’t been to Bath. Don’t know how I’m going to fit that in. (I didn't, yet again.)

Interestingly, his daughter owns the nice B&B around the corner and down the street, also across from the Hoe, which was the other lodging place I had considered. I’ve decided to stay in Plymouth over next weekend so may move over there Saturday morning if this room is booked, and maybe even if it’s not just so I can try both places. Also, she has just started doing a tea. I was going to go tomorrow but now will be going to Sidmouth so will try for the tea on Wednesday.

What I need to decide is whether or not I want a third week in Plymouth. (I wound up staying five weeks!) I will check out the situation in Sidmouth first. And then I should figure out when to meet a relative of my Mother's 2nd husband who lives in Hampshire. Might make most sense to leave for Heathrow from Hampshire. Or, would it be feasible to drop off one suitcase (the blasted 2nd suitcase) initially and do some tripping around before returning for a proper visit?

And I still have to get back to Winslow, Buckinghamshire from where I want to return to nearby Addington to clean off the ancestors headstones in the churchyard. If I stay a 3rd week in Plymouth (which I am kind of leaning toward at the momen), I might just keep the room here or at the B&B and take the train up to Oxford or wherever. (Unfortunately, I never got back to Winslow.)

Last week was so nice when I didn’t have to make decisions.

Think I’ll go out in the sunshine now and write some postcards up on the promenade.
